Kettering History In 1798 John Patterson became the first settler in the area. In 1841 the Van Buren Township was established. In 1952 the named was changed to the Village of Kettering, in tribute to Charles F. Kettering who invented the automobile self-starter. The population experienced a significant decline from 1970 to 1980. The region lost a large number of jobs in the 1980's at General Motors facilities.
